Implementing Common Core

Definition of Common Core

Common core can be defined as a given set of academic standards, in the subjects of mathematics and English Language arts/literacy (ELA). The objective is to create an outline of the basic knowledge, which should be possessed by students, as they reach the end of a grade. The purpose of the creation of the Common core is to ensure that high-school graduate students are equipped with the necessary skills to pursue college, career or life, irrespective of where they go.

Importance

There are 43 states, which have taken up the common core voluntarily and are working towards establishing them as standards. The importance of the Common core lies in the fact that they aim at establishing a uniform standard in order to facilitate learning progress in career, no matter where the student is. The standard promotes equality among students by ensuring that they can compete as well as collaborate with their peers both at home and abroad. This will ensure that the students from the US do not face a setback when facing a global atmosphere, with students and professionals from across the world with various degrees of skills and abilities.

Implementation

In order to implement the common core, a proper framework and environment is needed with the required guidance provided to the teachers involved. This requires the states to individually take up legislations and take an effort to implement the standards throughout the schools, colleges and universities all across the state. 48 states across the US have taken up this Common Core, in some form or the other. These standards have to be taken into account a number of requirements, which are given importance in different fields related to career and higher education. However, a few states have also introduced legislations to repeal these common core standards or dilute their provisions.

Conclusion

Common core was devised as a method to improve the educational standards and help students in the US acquire the required skills to survive and flourish in both the academic and outside worlds. These skills could be ensured by making sure that students have an understanding of a set of fundamental concepts regarding each and every subject taught, at the end of a grade. However, the implementation of the common core requires some fundamental infrastructure and educational standards, which may or may not be present in all the states of the US. Thus a few states have not accepted or diluted the provisions for the common core.
